Reading Themes
Imagine It! is a core elementary reading program for
grades K-5 from SRA/McGraw Hill. Imagine It! combines

friendly and engaging themes that open the world of reading
to young children.

In Kindergarten Imagine It! has 10 units that revolve around a central theme. Some units help students' expand their perspective on universal themes such as friendship, perseverance and working together by relating what they read to their own experiences. Other units focus on science and social studies content and involve students in research activities that encourage students to ask questions and learn as part of a collaborative group.
Theme 1: Off to School
Becoming a student is a big step in a five year-old's life - one that can be both exciting and frightening. This first unit about school helps children feel more comfortable about their new world. As we read books and poems about school, children will begin to relate their own feelings and experiences to those of story characters. This offers them the perfect opportunity to think about and discuss this new chapter in their lives.
Theme 2: Patterns
In this unit children will begin to see their world in an exciting new ways. Stories and poems about patterns will encourage children to observe patterns everywhere they go and even create their own. Shapes and colors will come alive as children begin to recognize the pleasing quality of patterns in their surroundings. They will learn that some patterns are unique and some actually serve a purpose.
Unit 3: Finding Friends
All children want to have at least one good friend. But choose and maintaining friendships can be a challenge. The stories in this unit present some of the friendship issues with which kindergartners struggle. By describing characters' actions, thoughts and feelings, the stories offer models of how and why people act as they do. The stories give children a better understanding of how to find and keep a friend.
Unit 4: By the Sea
Most children are only vaguely aware of the vast array of plants and animals that live in and around the ocean. They have not yet begun to understand how oceans affect their lives - and the lives of all the people in the world. The purpose of this unit is to help children focus on and investigate oceans and the life in and around them. The primarily informational texts and scientific investigations in this unit help children discover many facts about the ocean, marine plant and animal life and the properties of ocean water and how it differs from the water we drink.
Unit 5: Stick to It
Perseverance is a quality that we associate with success. In this unit kindergartners experience perseverance vicariously as they enter the worlds of different story characters. Through these characters, children learn the importance and satisfaction of sticking to an activity even though it may not be fun and the payoff may not be immediate. Kindergartners also reflect on instances in their own lives when they persisted and begin to incorporate the qualities that these episodes reveal into their evolving sense of self.
Unit 6: My Shadow
Children are fascinated with shadows. Because they do not yet understand what makes shadows appear, children find them intriguing, mysterious and even magical. The reading selections in investigations in this unit build on children's natural curiosity about shadows. As they learn more about the physical properties of shadows, children sharpen their questions and deepen their understanding of this phenomenon.
Unit 7: Teamwork
Kindergartners recognize that people play sports on teams. But they may not think of their own family or class as a team. In this unit children read a variety of selections that teaches them the value of teamwork in reaching a goal. Through their own investigations, children begin to understand how teams work and to appreciate their own talents of others on a team.
Unit 8: Ready, Set Grow!
Children have a natural curiosity for living, growing things - perhaps because they know that they are growing too. In this unit, children will listen to a variety of texts that teaches them what it means to be alive and how different living things grow. Through investigations, children will explore plant life in their classroom and learn to understand and appreciate how plants grow and change.
Unit 9: Red, White and Blue
In this unit we focus on the concept of patriotism as we learn about the United States of America and what it stands for. Children listen to a variety of texts that inspires feelings of national pride. We learn about the American flag, celebrate the country's beauty and capture the exhilaration of a parade. Through our readings children will also examine the various ways people express patriotism.

In this unit children will begin to notice the wind and ask questions about it. Their curiosity will come alive as they listen to texts that tell how the wind is created, how it changes and how it can make our lives easier and more difficult.
